Play time!

When is the last time you played like a kid?
Today, I was able to work from home in the afternoon.  Knowing I was going to have a busy night (sorry for such a late post!), I decided to go out for a jog around 2:45.  Christian begged to go with me.  Have you ever tried to "run" with a 4 year old?  It is a GREAT workout.  First you sprint.  Then you stop suddenly so as to avoid running over said 4 year old completely.  Then you sprint again.  Then you lift 43 lbs. of dead weight when said 4 year old is "tired" of running.  (Wait, didn't he just beg me - with tears in his eyes - to go out "running" with me?)

So we ran to the park, about a quarter mile or so from our house.  Sprinting.  Stopping.  Carrying.  Repeat.  Repeat.  Repeat.  Once there, Christian immediately ran for the swings.  The swings are in a mulch area that is separated from the grass by railroad ties.  Christian and I decided the railroad ties were our balance beam and we walked the perimeter, with abs pulled in tight and arms straight out for balance.  We next tackled the sliding board where Christian and I raced... he climbed up the stairs and I climbed up the slide.  The slide was really steep, and I'm thinking I'm going to have to incorporate more visits to the park in my exercise routine, because it was FUN!  We did this several times until we decided to head back to the swing area and did lateral jumps over the railroad ties.  Holy workout!  And Christian was thrilled the whole time because Mommy was coming up with such exciting ways to exercise play.

After about 30 minutes, we had to head back to the house to get ready for Christian's soccer practice.  And guess who got a piggy back the whole way home?  Yep, Christian is THAT strong!  Just kidding... he asked  for it and I thought, why not... I'm sure this counts as some sort of exercise!  I even jogged part of the way!  When we got close enough to the house, I put him down and we raced home.  We landed on the door mat at the same time... a perfect tie!

Soccer Mom
Blas and I took Christian to soccer practice at Palmetto Middle School.  Once practice started, I took off on a jog to explore some of Pinecrest.  Having already warmed up (and definitely feeling the burn from those lateral jumps!) I was feeling pretty good, but I wanted to get back to the practice in time for the scrimmage portion.  I did a 1.65 mile loop in 17:30.  That puts me at a 10:36/mile pace.  Apparently I should play more often, as that is my fastest pace for anything over a mile in the last year!

Lessons Learned
30 minutes doesn't have to be at the gym or running or biking or swimming... it can simply be playing with my kids.  I would love for Christian and Connor to grow up thinking that exercise is a part of normal, everyday life - the rule and not the exception.  And while they're small, I'd love for them to think that Mommy is just really good at playing!  Do any of you incorporate playground or park "equipment" into an exercise routine?  I'd love to hear about it!

Happy training,
Kellee
