Post Thanksgiving Weigh-In
It's official... it is possible to eat like a pig and still lose weight. I'm not quite sure how it happened, but I just returned home from four days in the Philadelphia area - for Thanksgiving no less - got on my scale, and lost a pound. WTF? My scale must be broken or the battery is low or something. But, I'm not going to complain. Oh, yeah, I sort of went into the holiday weekend up 4 lbs. from my lowest. Whoops. Notwithstanding, I'm doing bars and shakes for a week (M-F) just to detox. If anyone has any suggestions on tasty options, please let me know. The Atkins Advantage Dark Chocolate Royale Shake isn't so bad.
Here's the Scoop...
So remember a while back when I thought I had a kidney stone, but the test was negative? Well, the doctor gave me another possibility that was so remote (in her opinion and mine) that I never even mentioned it... shingles. And guess what? I got it. And I've essentially spent the last three/four weeks with off and on fever and the most bizarre nerve pain (sometimes intense like a kidney stone, other times annoying like hundreds of ants crawling across my skin.) So I've been completely off the exercise wagon because I just didn't have the energy and the best thing for recovery is to get plenty of rest.
The Fine Print
Shingles is the chicken pox virus. If you've had chicken pox in the past, it is possible that you'll have a recurrence of the virus as an adult. The rash is generally more contained to one area of the body and rather than being an itchy skin rash, it attacks nerve endings. (Yeah, fun.) If you've been around me the last month... don't worry. According to my doctor (and the CDC), the only way to transmit the virus is if you come/came into contact with the fluid inside the blisters of the rash. Yum. My blisters never broke open or "crusted over" (double yum) and were always covered by multiple layers of clothing. So, you're in the clear. In the meantime, so am I. So that means back to the routine.
Exercise Through the Holidays
Because I've been out of the loop for so long, I really need to rebuild my endurance on the running end of things. I'll be trying to run on my own 3x per week in addition to the long runs on the weekends. My long runs may not match up with FDC's simply because I don't want to injure myself with the race only 2 months away. That would suck. In addition to the running, I'll be exploring more of the on demand exercise programs. My hope is that most days, I run in the morning before work and do 30 minutes of exercise after work. That way, I can enjoy the two weddings and countless holiday parties that will be filling my calendar over the next month!
Happy training,
Kellee

I Got a Need for Speed....
Surprise!
It is a morning blog post!!! I actually followed the plan and snoozed once (remember, it was built in) getting up at 5:09 a.m. to do a speed workout. I have missed the last several weeks of speed workouts with One Track Miami (for various reasons) and I don't want to fall too far behind. Of course, doing it on my own, in my neighborhood, is a little different than doing it at the track with fellow runners and two coaches!!
The Workout
[Something to keep in mind as I post this is my average speed for a shorter distance is generally somewhere between 12:00 and 12:30/mile. Also, my "meter" markings are my best guess; I think my actual distance run was a little further than intended.]
800m Jog for Warm-up - 6:00
No Recovery
200m Run - 1:00
200m Walk Recovery (approx. 2:00)
200m Run - 1:05
200m Walk Recovery (approx. 2:00)
400m Run - 2:05
200m Jog Recovery (approx. 1:45)
400m Run - 2:10
200m Jog Recovery (approx. 1:45)
400m Run - 2:10
200m Jog Recovery (approx. 1:45)
600m Walk Recovery (approx. 5:00) - I was cracking myself up here... I wanted to start "at the starting line" and realized too late that I should have turned around for 200m rather than walked 600m... oh well!
800m Run - 4:25
800m Jog Recovery - 6:00
Total Time: 37:10
Running Distance: 2400m (approx. 1.5 miles)
Running Pace: 8:37/mile (yes, I realize I'm switching between metric and English)
Recovery Distance: 2400m (approx. 1.5 miles)
Total Distance: 4800m (approx. 3 miles)
I was really sucking wind after this workout. I'm not sure if it is the lingering cold, the cooler/drier temps., a little bit of asthma, or the speed... but holy cow! It took me a really hot steamy shower (after the cold blast I always give my muscles after a run) and an HOUR before I stopped the dry hacking cough. My inhaler was in the baby's room in a diaper bag (don't ask) and no way was I going in there while I was still sleeping!
Weekend Long Run
We have a crazy busy day tomorrow with Blas running at 6:30 a.m., Christian has a soccer game at 9:00 a.m., and then the whole family is going to a birthday party at 11:00 a.m. That means I'll get to go to the gym during afternoon naptime... woo hoo! On Sunday, I'll do 8 miles, including double Goliath, and then we may road trip it to Islamorada. I'll have to check out the weather, but I would love to be outside!
Anyone have fun plans for the weekend?

Another One Bites the Dust!
Or, The Same One Bites the Dust - Again!
There is this lovely phenomena called "Runner's Toenails" or "Marathon Toenails"... essentially, over time, one or more toenails turn white or purple or black and then fall off completely, usually with the beginnings of a new nail already coming in. It is pretty disgusting.
Inthe pedicure capital of the world Miami, where open-toed shoes are the rule rather than the exception (even for work) I try to avoid this affliction like the plague. I do everything I'm "supposed" to do... I wear my shoes at least a half size big with plenty of room in the toebox. I wear ridiculously expensive the right kind of socks. I keep my toenails unfashionably short.
And yet, every year, once I hit 7-8 miles in my training runs, it happens. The blister forms under the toenail that would be the equivalent to my "index finger" on my left foot. I drain the blister in an effort to preserve the nail for as long as possible. But, I know. The nail will be history soon. It is always the same nail. It is the only nail. But it happens EVERY year.
And this year, it happened earlier than I expected. Goliath didn't leave me compeltely unscathed. A little piece of me was left behind. Farewell, Mr. Toenail. You were loved.
The Workout
Today's workout was, you guessed it, Abs and Arms. I should have taken advantage of the weekend and gone to the gym. I had every intention of getting in an Ibis Express. Life got in the way. So while Blas and Christian were getting haircuts (Blas) and making a Target run (thank goodness it wasn't me on a rainy Sunday afternoon), I was home with a napping Connor and working on my, ahem, problem areas. This time I concentrated on my lower abdominal muscles... for anyone who has had a Cesarean section like me, they are the LAST muscles to "come back" - if they ever come back! I did 500 crunches with about half of them focused on the lower section. For the arms portion, I did 3 sets of 8 "girl" push-ups, and 3 sets of 15 biceps curls, shoulder presses, and triceps extensions with the 9 lb. medicine ball.
The Diet
I pretty much ate like a pig this weekend. I blame the horrendous cold I'm currently battling. It is that "cough so hard you start to choke and your eyes water and you're not sure if you're going to throw up or not cold." Feed a cold, starve a fever, right?!? Blas, Christian and I all have it. Connor does not. I'm hoping it stays that way, but the Magic 8 Ball says, "Outlook Not So Good." I'm looking forward to getting back on track with the diet and weight loss this week!
Happy training,
Kellee
